âMorning, Doctor. You have four voicemails from Eleanor Devero, and two from her fiancé,â Cara informs me about three minutes after I come inside.
âThank you,â I say after she spits off the rest of my messages. âCan you transfer me to Detective Dalton, please?â Women tend to be more long-winded and emotional than men, but men offer a better view of the timeline.
On the second ring, Kace picks up.
âHello?â he answers with a strained voice.
Purposely, I wait a few seconds to test his patience threshold.
âHello!â he clips, this time at a louder pitch, solidifying my âtrouble-in-paradiseâ theory.
âHello, this is Dr. Nolan Mills. Iâm returning your calls.â
âOhâ¦â He pauses, and due to the decrease in background noise, I assume, heads to a quieter place. âSorry about that, Dr. Mills.â
âItâs all right. What can I help you with?â
âI need to schedule a session with you. Or maybe coupleâs therapy ⦠I donât know. Your homework isnât working.â
âSomething happened,â I affirm and take a seat at my desk, extending my second drawer and removing one of the neatly stacked note cards.
âYes, something fucking happened. Elleâs not getting better, or she was and she ⦠sheâs not ready to come back to work,â he says with finality.
âDetective Dalton, Iâve already sent in my recommendation to your captain.â I balance the receiver between my chin and shoulder and reach for one of the many identical, black ballpoint pens in the holder.
âI know, but I talked to her this morning, and sheâs not ready.â
Twice. At the right-hand side of the page, I add a date and then a quick session summary while I listen to Kaceâs labored breaths. âCan you explain to me why you believe your fiancée isnât ready to return to work with you?â
âItâs not with me,â he clarifies. âItâs in general. Sheâs not ready to be here, at least not until things settle down on our end.â
I presume heâs speaking of my case. âYour captain tells me you need extra help with the investigation youâve been working on, and her particular skill set can be useful. He said you had some suspects.â
âWe can do it without her.â He grunts and slams something. âI donât want her here interrogating anyone.â
âPerhaps we share the same concern.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âI did communicate my concerns with your captain. Iâm not sure sheâs fully capable of using her behavior interpretation abilities.â
âWhy do you say that?â His tone adjusts, and his voice returns to the standard decibel, infused with concern.
âShe exhibits a slower reaction time, and from my limited knowledge on the subject, micro-expressions last about half a second. This doesnât mean she isnât perceptive to other forms of body language, however. Thus, why I recommended reinstating her.â I pause to let that all sink in. âPerhaps, I was wrong. Can you give me a specific reason why you believe she isnât ready? What happened?â
âWe were getting ready this morningâ¦â
As in something they did together. His pause suggests more to the story, so I guide the answer in the right direction.
